Completion Date: 2003

Architect: Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates

The Roger S. Berlind Theater represents a significant expansion to the existing McCarter Theater complex at Princeton University. The new theater is constructed "back to back" with the existing Matthews stage. The new Berlind Theater includes a new rehearsal space on the lower level also capable of housing smaller productions.

The Berlind Theater has been provided with new independent HVAC systems for the auditorium, stage house, and rehearsal spaces. The systems are connected to the central campus steam and chilled water utility grid. Each system is provided with year round dehumidification capability for large occupancies.

HVAC systems are configured in a conventional overhead ducted supply and an under seat plenum for low velocity return. The two main supply air trunk ducts have been integrated into decorative columns, which frame the proscenium opening. Great care was taken to acoustically isolate the air systems which serve the several performance and rehearsal and support spaces. This was a critical design feature since the rehearsal spaces are directly below the main house.

The Berlind Theatre addition is approximately 27,000 gross square feet. The theatre features stepped stadium seating that will allow excellent visibility of the stage from all seats. The new Berlind auditorium will seat between 355 - 382 patrons. The new theater will compliment the original 1,100 seat house to allow for a full range of productions.
