This project represents our second project relationship with the Smithsonian Institution; the first being the master planning of the National Museum of the American Indian.
The Museum has acquired two town houses directly adjacent to Museum site, which were converted to collection storage and office functions. One of the challenges of the project was upgrading of the existing envelope to permit a current museum collection storage environment. The town houses are located in a landmark district and as such, their facades must be maintained.
Our responsibilities included establishing a practical program considering the project's landmark and budgetary constraints.
Our project scope was expanded to include the upgrade of the main museum's mechanical and electrical infrastructure. This included the replacement of the main chillers and air handlers, replacement and upgrade of the building electrical service, and a new emergency power system. This work was completed while minimizing the disruptions and downtime of critical systems.
In 2003, we will be completing the design for several spaces within the Fox House that were still occupied as private residential apartments during the renovation of the early 1990's. That work will be completed by the end of 2004.
