Duke University Athletic Center
Durham, North Carolina

Mechanical and Electrical Engineers
Completion Date: 2000

Architects: Cesar Pelli and Associates

The new Duke Athletic Center directly adjoins the famous Cameron Pavilion, home of Duke University Basketball.

The project program included a new Athletic Hall of Fame and function space for pre and post game events. On the lower level, new locker facilities and training rooms were provided for the men's and women's basketball programs, as well as new lockers for visiting teams.

Also part of the program is a small office building for the men's and women's coaching staff, including conference rooms for review of game films and recruiting.

AltieriSeborWieber LLC designed all air variable air volume systems for the office building with heating provided at zone terminals. The building is highly zoned with one zone per room.

The lockers and training rooms are served by variable volume systems, which operate, based upon occupancy.

High pressure (100 psig) campus steam is reduced in pressure and converted to low temperature hot water. Condensate is returned to the central plant using steam powered positive displacement condensate return units.

Chilled water is accepted from the campus loop and distributed to loads by secondary chilled water pumps.

The new building is discretely hidden between the Cameron Pavilion and the adjacent athletic fields. Ventilation air and exhaust are hidden from view in areaways between the new building and the Cameron Pavilion.
