The 134,000 square foot facility was expanded to 538,450 square feet. This renovation and major expansion of the 1955 landmark central library houses closed stacks, general collections and the City's valuable Western Heritage Collection in closely controlled environments.
It is now the largest library between Los Angeles and Chicago, and each year over a million people visit the Central Library.
A new central heating cooling plant was designed which included new boilers, chillers and cooling towers. The system was provided with a water-side economizer cycle to permit the production of chilled water without chiller operation during periods of low wet bulb temperature. Separate conservation quality climate control systems were provided for the Library's Western Heritage Collection, archives and other rare book storage spaces.
