Architects: Jose Rafael Moneo

The Museo del Prado has retained the Pritzker Prize winning architect Jose Rafael Moneo to expand their current facility. The existing museum of approximately 300,000 Ft2 is to be expanded by 175,000 Ft2.

The new wing will house a library, art storage, administrative and gallery spaces, as well as a new public gathering space to link the original building with the new wing. There will also be minor modifications to the original building to allow for the easy movement of visitors from the original wing to the new. The original ceremonial entrance, shown below, will be re-opened for formal events.

The architect has named Andrew J. Sebor, P.E. to evaluate the condition of the existing mechanical systems and to prepare a program for the engineering of the mechanical systems to serve the new expansion. In addition, the mechanical system of the existing building has been evaluated and recommendations for upgrade have been submitted to the Spanish engineering team.

As the design progresses, AltieriSeborWieber's engineers will continue to provide peer review services as well as advice on specific engineering issues such as daylighting control and HVAC system organization, and HVAC zoning and control.
