The Cloisters was constructed in 1938 with funds provided by the Rockefeller family. It is the center of the medieval collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The building was originally designed without consideration of creating an appropriate conservation environment for the many objects of medieval art currently on display.

Over the past 20 years AltieriSeborWieber Consulting Engineers has participated in the engineering of numerous small projects at the Cloisters including air conditioning of the Treasury, Spanish Gallery, Bookstore, and Employee Cafeteria.

In 1997, we teamed with the office of Ann Beha Associates and others in performing a detailed conditions assessment of the building with the goal of providing a master plan for the improvement of the conservation environment at the Cloisters.

In 2000, with Einhorn Yaffee Prescott, we renovated the G6 art storage vault and provided new system to serve the small in site conservation laboratory. During that period we performed several studies for the general upgrade of the climate control system. The first step of this work was realized with the installation of a new temporary cooling tower.
