We have recently completed this $ 97M+ replacement of the former Hayden Planetarium including renovation of the adjoining spaces. In addition to the reconstruction of the Planetarium itself, the project includes new parking facilities, exhibition spaces, an outdoor plaza, and new retail space. The Rose Center opened to the public in March of 2000.
The new Planetarium is housed in a sphere. The top half of this sphere contains the state-of-the-art, "Sky Theater". In the bottom half of the sphere in another theater, visitors witness a recreation of the Big Bang. From here, they follow a walkway that tracks 15 billion years of evolutionary events, starting with the first few moments of the universe and ending in the present day.
ASW worked closely with RWDI to create a computational fluid dynamics model of the cube to assist in the design of smoke removal systems and air delivery for HVAC.
The project involved new systems and renovations of the existing systems serving the adjacent wing. Also included was replacement of the Museum's north electrical service and redistribution of existing MEP services from the central power house through the new building.
