The Ballantine House located in Newark, New Jersey, is a National Historic Landmark and is part of the Newark Museum. A complete renovation was undertaken in 1992.
The work was completed in 1994.
The building now houses the Museums' changing decorative art exhibitions, silver collection, offices, and meeting facilities. The building skin was upgraded and new HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems were provided. The central chilled water, steam, and heating services were provided from the main building to reduce the risk to the house from mechanical failure.
AltieriSeborWieber participated in the analysis of the building envelope with the architect and curatorial consultant, Garrison/Lull. The new HVAC systems were tailored to the building's ability to tolerate high levels of humidity in winter. An analysis was performed of the glazing system as well as a vapor diffusion analysis on the walls and roof to determine the acceptable level of winter humidification.
