Church of the Atonement
Quogue, New York

Mechanical and Electrical Engineers
Completion Date: 2001

AltieriSeborWieber LLC was asked to oversee the installation of air conditioning of this small historic church in Quogue, NY, a small ocean front community on eastern Long Island. The Church is used exclusively in summer and for the occasional wedding or funeral at other times of the year.

We consulted directly to the church administration. We provided design direction, assisted in the selection of a qualified contractor, and administered the construction on behalf of the Church.

Two new 5-ton heat pump systems were specified. AltieriSeborWieber LLC worked with local contractor Weber & Grahn to coordinate the locations of grilles within the building interior to minimize the intrusions on the unique "fish scale" wood shingle interior wall surfaces. The air handling systems were installed in the crawl space of the church to eliminate the need for any mechanical space within the church.

The outdoor heat pumps units were placed behind existing mature plantings in the church garden to both muffle sound and hide them from view.

In addition, an automatic dehumidification cycle was provided to maintain a maximum interior humidity of 60% during events such as weddings. This was accomplished by adding an auxiliary electric heating coil to each of the two air handling systems. The dehumidification cycle can be manually engaged or left in "automatic" mode.

The new air-conditioning systems also required an upgrade to the electric service.
