The Disney Sign, Times Square
New York, NY

Completion Date: 1999

Architect: Kupiec Architects

AltieriSeborWieber provided support-engineering services for the fabrication of the new multi-media sign located at 1644 Broadway facing Times Square. The sign is a combination of computer controlled, custom fabricated video modules, which make up the nine-multimedia "ribbons" surrounding a SONY "Jumbotron" television. The building was fully occupied during the construction period. The sign was placed into service in the summer of 1999.

Working with Disney and SONY engineers, AltieriSeborWieber developed a coordinated power and signal distribution network to 400 power modules, and the Jumbotron itself.

The electronics of the sign are fully accessible from the rear. The routing of each conduit was individually considered. Close coordination with both the building and sign structural support system was required to reach each power and signal module, as well as permitting access and service.

The ventilation air supply provided to cool the sign is filtered and uniformly distributed to protect the electronics.

AltieriSeborWieber engineers worked closely with Disney, architects, SONY, video consultants, contractors and fabricators to maximize factory fabrication and minimize the sign erection period. Work on the design for the sign began in the fall of 1998. The sign was built, tested, and on line for the millennium celebration in less than one year.

We feel this project is a testimonial to the kind of creative engineering that AltieriSeborWieber can offer to projects with unique design problems.
